Building Generational Wealth:  Why Getting Rich and Staying Wealthy Are Two Completely Different Skills

Mahesh Patel, Melrose Consultancy founder, speaks on building generational wealth in a conversation with Brij Thankey

Most entrepreneurs spend years learning how to build a successful business. Very few spend the same amount of time thinking about building generational wealth and what it actually takes to protect the business that it eventually creates.

Mahesh Patel, founder of Melrose Consultancy, has spent 35 years answering that question for other people. He has advised business owners on growth, international expansion, exits, and succession, and has personally overseen family offices with assets exceeding $500 million. Along the way, he has watched fortunes built through extraordinary determination, and some of those same fortunes disappear through decisions that could have been avoided.

His conversation with Brij Thankey on Unfiltered with Brij isn’t really about accounting. It’s about trust, and what it costs to carry it once it has been given to you.

From Bean Counter to the Man Families Trusted With Everything

Mahesh never set out to run a family office. He qualified as a chartered accountant in 1991, and quickly realised he was, by his own admission, a hopeless auditor. What he actually enjoyed was cornering the founders and CFOs of the companies he was meant to be auditing and asking how they were actually making their money.

That curiosity got him his first real break, a financial controller role at a family-owned fashion manufacturer turning over £10 million a year. The family made their expectations clear from day one.

“We are not looking for a bean counter. We want you to get involved in the commercial side.”- Mahesh Patel.

Twenty-five years later, he had helped take that business from £10 million to £300 million, setting up offices across the world along the way. The job title kept changing, and what he was trusted with kept getting bigger.

The Moment He Understood That Building Generational Wealth Is a Different Skill Entirely

Most entrepreneurs, Mahesh says, treat their business and their personal wealth as the same thing, and he has watched that assumption sink people who had built genuinely successful companies.

“One is short-term with no guarantees. Wealth is long-term with hopefully guarantees.” – Mahesh Patel.

The families who managed to hold onto what they had built weren’t more cautious by temperament. They planned differently. Decades ahead instead of years, and they treated protecting the wealth as seriously as they had once treated building it.

“You have to plan decades in advance rather than years in advance. You have to put structures in place before structures are actually required.” — Mahesh Patel.

Mahesh describes the founders he worked with as almost obsessive about downside risk, some of them waking up in a cold sweat over the fear of losing it all, a fear he came to see less as paranoia and more as the actual discipline that kept fortunes intact for the next two, three, or four generations.

What Mahesh Patel, Melrose Consultancy Founder, Really Protects Isn’t Money

Ask most people what a family office does, and they’ll mention investments, banking, or tax. Mahesh’s day-to-day looked rather different.

He was planning for his son’s wedding and, in the same conversation, planning for the possibility of that same son’s divorce. He was building tax structures years in advance of an inheritance nobody wanted to think about yet. And often the job was simply mundane: cancelling a dog’s grooming appointment, booking a vet, or making sure the smallest bills got paid so a founder never had to think about them.

“I had to write the check out to say pay that to the milkman.” – Mahesh Patel.

Those years also changed how Mahesh saw success itself. He watched clients and former colleagues miss the birth of a child, miss every parents’ evening, build extraordinary businesses while missing the ordinary moments that never come back.

Lately, he’s noticed the next generation doing it differently: switching phones off at weekends, protecting time with their kids in ways the founders he first worked with in the 1990s rarely allowed themselves to.

When Brij asks what matters to him now, Mahesh doesn’t reach for the assets under management.

“Don’t ever compromise the family name at the expense of making money.’ – Mahesh Patel
